Roosevelt River Lodge

The Roosevelt River Lodge is located in the Southern part of the Brazilian state of Amazonas in between the Roosevelt and Maderinha rivers at the bottom of the Santa Rita waterfall.

Our area of operations focuses on the observation of birds and game fishing throughout all twelve months of the year. Our property covers more than 8,000,000 acres of an uninhabited ecological area. Not only are we the only permanent residents, our area is also void of land clearing, farms, loggin factories, and other organizations assuring that all of our acres are completely intact as the day it was discovered. Our distance from such disturbances is accentuated by the fact that the only means of reaching us is by airplane from the city of Porto Velho located in the nearby state of Acre, which is closer to us than the city of Manaus.

The Roosevelt River was named in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt who was in the area in the years 1913 to 1914 leading a scientific expedition sponsored by New York's Museum of Natural History. In his book detailing his exploration of Brazil's wilderness, President Roosevelt stated that he set up camp on the 21st of April, 1914 on the very location where our resort is located. The geographic coordinates he gave of the camp are the very coordinates on which our runway lays.

To date, we have catalogued approximately 500 species of birds plus countless more still under research, not to mention 12 kinds of primates. We offer our guests 12 different trails in various locations where they are sure to find a large amount of rare species of birds. Along the way our guests also encounter a wide variety of animals that inhabit the local area. Many times the animals are observed eating their food from the surrounding land.

The different species of fish in the Roosevelt river and surrounding areas are: Peacock Bass, Trairao, Traira, Aruana, Pyara, Tambaqui, Pacu, Giant Red Tail Catfish, Jau, Piranha, and many more.
